Within the project “Women’s human rights – empowerment of women” supported by Ecumenical Women’s Initiative, Association of women “Derventa” held a round table with the title “Research results on respect of Law for gender equality in media” with participation of media representatives, members of Municipal committee for gender equality, representatives of the Council of high school students with their pedagogues, representatives of the OSCE – office in Doboj, representatives of local authorities and Association of women “Derventa”.
The member of project team, Nada Dodig, met the participants with the research results on respect of Law for gender equality in media, specifically in local papers „Derventski list“. The conclusion was that in a period of research in local papers, the place for women is provided and in that way they are affirmed and more visible, but there is still an unballanced presence of women and men. Gender sensitive language is in use, but not always, there is a good will in media representation of women, but it’s not continuous.
Recommendations and opinions sent from the round table are that for respect gender equality it is necessary to involve engagement of all representatives in all segments of society: family, education, employment, economy, politics, authorities and media. It is necessary to speak more about women’s position in community which will initiate women to involve in public and political life and which will be followed by media. Respect of Law for gender equality implies the usage of gender sensitive language in media which should be an obligation.
